It's too pricey though, with each unit being around $500!

It's actually for professionals, engineers, and structural designers. This mouse helps them view vital 3D model info and activate commands easily for 3D applications.

I hear the new software is open source, so that it's going to be easy to add more features when necessary.

Yup. What's more, the updates would allow for a tighter integration between the mouse and CAD applications that supports it.

I think it's great that they are constantly improving this. I hope that it gets a wider user base than it has now. I am curious as to how this mouse works really.

Yup, 3Dconnexion has been having a lot of talks with its users. That is how they are able to come up with enhancements and improvements that are relevant to them.

New features on this update include the model properties applet. The applet enables engineers to view key information on the LCD to help increase productivity and make it easier to collaborate with other people.

It also has an intelligent key notification, which is a visual confirmation pop-up that tells you that a certain key is activated.
